24 March 2007 :: Times change
It's funny how things can change in a relatively short space of time.
Funny is perhaps the wrong word but things have changed for me irrevocably in the last year and I'm afraid that as a result I had little time for last years Doctor Who series. I managed to see it all of course, one way or another, but it did little for me. Whether that was because it really was a bit... well, patchy, or because what was going in in my life at the time precluded any great enjoyment of it I'm not sure - I'll have to re-watch once some time has passed to make a decision on that one.
However, I did find a replacement in my affections which in many ways did chime with where I was at. Life on Mars was the TV highlight of the year for me, a series that combined time travel (or perhaps it wasn't) and nostalgia (I think that was the clincher for me) with social comment and laughter. It was a clever, witty and brilliantly written and acted series that, along with Doctor Who the year before has helped to redefine the current TV landscape in the UK and although this year sees the second, and final, series I feel sure we'll be seeing a lot more of many of the series leads, including the rather brilliant Mr John Simm...
So here we are, about to embark on the third, yes third, new series of Doctor Who for the noughties (or is that naughties, someone somewhere knows what I mean!). It's actually looking rather good from the trailers and publicity so I'm hoping for a more engaging viewing experience this year. I've moved on and have, for the first time in a while, found a quiet and happy place and I'm hoping that'll help me to appreciate Who this year - I'm certainly getting excited and that's a good sign!
So, hopefully this is The Cuttings Archive back on track at last but bear with us whilst we find our feet again... and take time to enjoy Doctor Who 2007, as well as the rest of Life on Mars.
You enjoy it too!
